What needs to change within us if we are to defeat Islamic Terrorism
Victory in any sport comes when you outreach your competitor
in all aspects of the game. War is also a game, the only difference
is that instead of a trophy, it is your sovereignty (or your way of life, or your life itself)
that is at stake. So it is all the more important that you outreach
your enemy in all aspects of war - your weaponry, your strategy, your
killer instinct, your tactics and above all your desire to decimate
the enemy. The one common element is that you need to surpass your
enemy in all aspects of this game of war.
The feeling of hate for the enemy, makes Muslims rejoice when any of the enemy
falls. That this rejoicing expresses itself in repugnant forms like
dancing over the corpses of the fallen enemy, ripping out body parts
like the heart and liver and displaying them as trophies of victory, is morbidity at its worst!
But then this is a common sight today in the West Bank as it has been all through
Islamic history. We can never do likewise and mark a return to
savagery! But then what do we do with the savages that we face today
and are attacking us? We can at least develop a defense mechanism
within us that will insulate us from any fellow-feeling for those who
want to destroy us and our way of life, if not more?

Today we have a war between the Western outlook and the Islamic
outlook. The West has better weaponry, but the Islamists have a far more lethal
killer instinct (literally). Whether the West has better strategy and
tactics or the Islamists have it, could be a matter of personal opinion
and endless debate. But today we see that the tactics employed by the
Islamists are far more ruthless than those employed by anybody else. This gives
the Islamists the advantage of surprise and shock and awe - again
literally! While "Shock and Awe" was supposed to be an American
technique used in the Iraq campaign in 2003, it is the Islamists who
first used it on 9/11 and after that on 3/11 at Madrid and 7/7 in
London, apart from Bali, Beslan, Jerusalem, etc. Where is it
that the Islamists score over the West in spite of the overwhelming
advantage that the West has in terms of superior weaponry? The
answer lies in the superiority that the Islamists have in their
killer instinct. The extent of hate that is drilled into their minds
for everything that is not a part of Islamic society is unparalleled. Not that they
don't have internecine hatreds. They have the most bloodied ones
within Muslim societies - between Shiites and Sunnis and along tribal
and clan lines. But the lion's share of their mentality of hate is
reserved for the non-Muslims. Here the Muslims can win hands down with
any adversary. The only exceptions in history are the Mongols led by
Hulagu Khan and the early Crusaders - both of whom could inflict
defeats on the Muslims as they outreached the Muslims in their hatred and cruelty.
Now it would be a morbid thing to advocate
that we educated cultured refined folks who live in democratic
societies, pursue respectable professions, should of all things
inculcate hatred within ourselves! Many would turn away in disgust with a
terse comment - here is another of those fanatics and we already have
many like Laden and Zarqawi! But there is one fundamental
difference in advocating a hardened attitude towards the Islamist terror.
The difference is similar to that between a man-eater tiger (Islamist terror) and a
hunter (the West) who hunts him down in self defense! But even there the tiger attacks as it is
hungry, while the Islamists attack as it their hatred drives them to
do so. The hunter does not hate the tiger, but his instinct of self-
preservation drives (or rather should drive) his determination to hunt down the tiger. His
determination has to outmatch the man-eater's instinct to attack. Here is
one secret that we in the West need to imbibe if we are to hut down
our enemies - the Islamists. Unless we do that, we shall continue to
be the dinner of the Islamists lust to murder us. The Unitary
hate that the Islamist terrorists have needs to be outmatched by our Unitary
determination to destroy them For this determination to become
unitary, it has to be subsumed by everything else. Till the goal of
destroying the Islamists is realized, we should pursue no other goal.
Our determination should not be dissipated towards other goals till
this goal is met. We cannot pursue our oil interests, or keeping trade barriers
down, or protecting domestic industry, or the Kyoto pact on
environmental issues, or inclucating democracy in the Mid-east et al. All these and other issues should be kept on hold till the first goal is achieved. Only then could we
match the unitary hatred of the Islamists to destroy us, by our
unitary and single-minded determination to destroy them. Hate of
the Islamists for us is matched by their fellow feeling for all those who
are Muslims For a Muslim, any other Muslim is a "brother
Muslim", the fellow feeling that they all belong to one
Community "Ummah" is overriding. This feeling overrides national,
racial, ethnic, cultural, culinary, sartorial and all other differences. It is this
fellow feeling that breeds on its flip side, a solid feeling of
hatred for all those outside the Muslim Ummah. This is one of the
fountainheads of Muslim hatred for the rest of humanity. Again on this count,
it would be naive to ask all Western nations who define themselves
with pluralism and tolerance for a multi-cultural identity to become
unitary to defeat a unitary enemy. We Yanks and Brits cannot see eye
to eye on 1776, nor do the French and the Brits on 1815 and their
colonial rivalry, nor could all Germans concur with other Europeans on 1914-1919
and 1939-1945, nor could all Russians and Americans on the Cold War! But then we need to sink these differences for the
time being and unite in a fellow-feeling for one another to outmatch
the psychology of the Islamic Ummah. This feeling can at least be
limited to military operations against the Islamist enemy. But even
for this limited alliance to materialize, the cross-currents of rivalry have to be subsumed
beneath the common interests of destroying the Islamic menace to our
way of life. This kind of a unity existed during the crusades, and then in 1699 when
Vienna was threatened, but has not happened since then, although today
the Islamic threat to our civilization is again peaking up. The
alternative is slow bleeding of the West - one nation at a time. For us to unite we need to
make our foreign policies subservient to one single interest of
beating our enemy, be it in the form of unanimously backing John
Bolton's proposals in the UN, or putting our economic interests or political ties and
treaties with the Muslim nations into the back burner while major
decisions like action against Iran (or Syria, or even Pakistan and
Saudi Arabia) are to be taken at the UN or the NATO, or in any future
military council that may come about. Absence of remorse when an
enemy is destroyed is an important factor in defeating Islam The feeling of hate for the enemy, makes a

of life. There are many leftists amongst us who want to belittle our
efforts in fighting the Islamists so as to have their vengeance for
the fall of Communism for which they blame the West, although Communism fell mainly due to its own inherent internal "Contradictions". We need to look upon these as a fifth column
and deal with them likewise - with ruthless military discipline. These apart
there are liberals and plain loonies too amongst us who suffer from
a "Stockholm Syndrome" on a global scale and weep for those who want
to shed our blood. We need to shake such types wide awake with a
awareness campaign as well as the possibility of criminal action if
they do not mend their ways. Only when we do this can we reach a
state of mind where we have no sneaking sympathy for the enemy and go
about the war on terror with military precision where our emotions
are measured and used for the objective of destroying our enemy,
