Sgt. Hasan Akbar, the American Muslim accused of murdering two officers and injuring 15 others in Kuwait, wrote about killing fellow soldiers in his diary.

“I suppose they want to punk me or just humiliate me. Perhaps they feel that I will not do anything about that. They are right about that. I am not going to do anything about it as long as I stay here. But as soon as I am in Iraq, I am going to try and kill as many of them as possible.”

His lawyers are scheduled to begin calling witnesses in their insanity defense Monday. I wonder if they’ll call any of the imams and sheikhs who preach these concepts in every Salafist mosque in the Islamic world, and try to argue that they’re “insane.”

We wonder when the wisdom we displayed during WW2, when we interned not just Japanese-American soldiers, but all Japanese-American citizens till the duration of American-Japanese hostilities. Yes on 9/11 we were not attacked by a nation, but by an asynchronous enemy with an outlook shared by a billion and a half people around the globe who inhabit and govern tens of nations across the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. So what do we do?

Obviously we need to display the same determination that we displayed towards one nation - the Japanese - when they attacked us. The only difference would be that this time we would have to upgrade our determination and extend it to interning Americans citizens who originate in all those countries who share the outlook of those who crashed the airliner into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on 9/11.

But then we don’t have to do it, we still have the option of harboring fifth columnists not just like Sgt. Hasan Akbar, John Walker Lindh, Jose Padilla, the Washington snipers all of whom were native born Americans, but the millions of others who have migrated from the Muslim world only to share in our prosperity but who would betray us when least expected and stab us in the back. The choice is entirely ours!

If we are to avoid this scenario, then all Americans of middle-eastern origin and all tourists and students of Arab and Muslim extraction, including all Arab and Muslims in our military, should be relocated into reserves to be kept out of harm's way (i.e. to keep them from harming us). We know that this suggestion will draw explosive reactions, but we cannot fight a war with half-hearted measures. The enemy we have living amidst us today in the War on Terror is far unlike the Japanese Americans or German Americans or those locally bred Nazis of World War 2 vintage.

The enemy living amidst us today is really malignant and malicious. Only with our rear safeguarded we can rest assured that we will not be stabbed in our back in our homeland with our bridges blown off, railroads messed around and subway stations gassed, while we pursue the war on terror across the globe. No amount of pacification and appeasement by declaring that “Islam is a religion of peace” and by visiting Mosques will help us in protecting our rear and flanks, when we start sending broadsides to hit our enemy’s jugular in the final struggle. Hence these iron-clad measures need to be taken before we start the final struggle. There are no soft options if we are to win against a beastly enemy. And we need to remember that Japanese American displayed billboards stating "I am an American" during WW2, but that did not prevent us from taking resolute action against them and holding them in preventive internment till the hostilities were in progress.

Is anyone at the Oval Office and the Pentagon thinking on similar lines?
